What to Look
for in a Trainer

1.  Does the trainer have a reputable certification and/or a degree in Exercise Science?
Not all personal training certification are equal.  Be careful when choosing a trainer.  The most respected certification are those from NSCA, ACSM, ACE and NASM.

2.  Does the trainer communicate well?
The trainer should take the time to explain and demonstrate things well.  They should break the exercises down if they seem too difficult to perform.

3.  Does the trainer ask me specific questions about my interests, goals and exercise history?
The trainer should interview during a consultation.  Valuable information can be gathered at this time that will help in the exercise programming and ultimate success of your fitness training.

4.  Does the trainer require paperwork such as a medical history form and an informed consent form?
If a trainer does not require paperwork such as a medical history form and informed consent form, be very leery.  If they over look this detail, what other details will they over look while training you?

5.  Do I feel comfortable with the trainer?
You must feel comfortable with your trainer.  Make sure you have time to meet and talk for a while.  Some personalities just have a harder time working together.  Remember, training is a partnership.  You should be able to question what is being done in the training session and not feel uncomfortable doing it.

6.  Can the trainer provide references from current or past clients?
Providing references should be easy for a trainer that has experience and success.

7.  Can the trainer provide proof of liability insurance?
All trainers must have liability insurance.  Some independent trainers may not think they need to obtain it but they do.

8.  How long has the trainer been training at the current facility?
There are many people that like to workout and decide they want to become a trainer.  Some do it as a "side" job while others may do it during their college years.  Remember, a good working relationship with your trainer is important.  You don't want to be forced to find a new trainer after a few months because the trainer quit working at the facility you go to.
